Elite Training. A New Calling. Family Companion Dogs.
Every dog that enters our program receives the same foundation — hundreds of hours of obedience, socialization, and real-world training. Not every dog goes on to formal service or therapy work, and that’s by design: we’d rather a dog “career change” into the perfect family pet than be pushed into a role that isn’t the right fit for them. The result is a dog with the manners, confidence, and training of a working service dog… and the heart of a family companion.
Why Some Dogs "Career Change"
Service and therapy work demands a very specific temperament — calm under pressure, laser-focused, and steady in any environment. Some of our most talented dogs simply don’t fit that mold, not because anything is wrong with them, but because their personalities are better suited to something else:
- Too social — a dog that wants to greet everyone makes a wonderful family dog, but a distracted service dog.
- Too playful or food-motivated — fantastic in a living room, less ideal in a focused public-access role.
- Sound-sensitive — a dog that startles at sirens or loud equipment isn’t right for service work, but is perfectly happy avoiding it in a family home.
- High energy or athletic — some dogs need an active household more than a structured working role.
A career change is not a downgrade. These dogs have already completed the same rigorous foundation as our service dogs — they’re simply being matched to the home where they’ll thrive most.
What's Already Done For You
A Northwest Elite Family Companion Dog typically arrives with:
- 100+ hours of foundational obedience training
- AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy and/or Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification
- House manners — crate trained, potty trained, calm with guests
- Solid leash manners and loose-leash walking
- Reliable core commands: sit, stay, down, place, leave it, come, off
- Extensive socialization with people, dogs, and everyday environments (stores, vehicles, crowds, children)
- A temperament evaluation matching the dog to the right kind of home
(Some of these items may vary, based on where the dog is when it changes career. We will work with the new owner to achieve our standard base level of obedience prior to pick up, if the dog is still in phase 1 training at career change.)
Is a Family Companion Dog Right for You?
This program is a great fit if you:
- Want the head start of professional training without raising a puppy from scratch
- Are a first-time dog owner who wants a dog that’s already “easy”
- Have kids, other pets, or a busy household and want a dog proven to handle it well
- Want peace of mind — temperament, training, and health all evaluated up front, with no guesswork
How Placement Works
- Submit an inquiry. Tell us about your home, lifestyle, and what you’re looking for.
- Conversation & match. We’ll talk through whether a current companion dog is the right fit for your household.
- Meet & greet. Spend time with the dog in person (or via video if you’re out of the area) before committing.
- Placement agreement. A placement fee covers the cost of training, health screening, and ongoing support — this is a placement of a fully trained dog, not a breeder transaction.
- Support after you bring them home. We’re available for questions, basic refreshers, and check-ins as your new companion settles in.
